VJ > Ace (Blog 27, Nick)

VJ Edgecombe was cooking in his debut Summer League game! He faced off against fellow top-5 pick Ace Bailey and the Utah Jazz, finishing with 28 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 blocks, and 1 steal.

I know it’s early to start drawing comparisons, but his first game showed flashes of a young Dwyane Wade, and he reminded me of a more athletic version of Jimmy Butler. Edgecombe displayed elite footwork, played exceptionally well in the pick-and-roll, and knocked down mid-range jumpers with confidence. He also took flight multiple times, trying to tear the rim down with highlight-reel dunks.

Ace Bailey showed flashes of his athleticism too, soaring what looked like 12 feet in the air to block a shot off the glass. An incredible defensive moment that showcased his upside.

Overall, both players seem to fit well with their respective teams. Bailey possesses raw talent and tremendous potential, but his shot selection was questionable at times. He shot just 3-of-13 from the field. He’s clearly a long-term developmental project who needs time to mature, which fits well with the Jazz. Utah is in a rebuilding phase with a young core that could grow together and become a legitimate threat in the Western Conference within the next 2–3 years.

But back to the Sixers—this is a Philly sports blog after all.

Edgecombe appears far more pro-ready, which aligns perfectly with the Sixers’ current trajectory. He’s a mature, defensive-minded guard who’ll be a problem in transition alongside Tyrese Maxey. He can also serve as a backup ball-handler if needed. His blend of toughness and finesse makes him both a basketball and cultural fit in Philadelphia.

If the Sixers can stay healthy and create chemistry together, they’re easily a top-3 contender in the Eastern Conference.

Fit matters at the next level, and while both teams made smart choices, the Sixers may have made the right choice by selecting VJ Edgecombe over Ace Bailey.
