Preseason Game 1- over reactions BLOG 30

Ok, it was fun to have Philadelphia Eagles football back in action last night. The fun part of the early season is to listen to people’s overreactions to vanilla scheme games. Games that do not have all the personnel on the field. Games that are just played to really look at pure athleticism and understanding.

With that aside, here are my overreactions to last night’s game.

#2 QB can play, but we already know this. After last year’s regular season games that Tanner played, you saw this kid had talent. So much so that the Eagles brass traded away the backup QB from last season. They never would have done that if they didn’t fully believe in Tanner McKee.

However, I already saw on X, people posting “should they give him a chance over Jalen Hurts. He is a pure pocket passer and that’s what every team needs”. “Let’s trade this guy for a number one draft pick”. The best one I read so far…”Let’s trade Jalen Hurts for an edge rusher, CB and draft capital”. WOW…, really people!!! At first, I thought they were being sarcastic, but they continued on about it trying to make a case. I was actually embarrassed for them.

My next one was about AJ Dillon, this guy is NOT meant to be a 1000 yard back, he is a short down specialist who has the power to break one. He is what he is. Listen I like our RB room, but Will Shipley has to show me he can break away from a tackle. Last night when he broke that run in the 1st QTR, he needed to break away from that last defender and not get tackled there. He needs to show me that he can shake someone off in the open field. I believe he can do it but just haven’t seen it yet.

Last one for last night, Kelee Ringo. UGH! I so what him to be that guy, but he just doesn’t look like he is. Granted he was playing against one of the top WR’s in the NFL, but it wasn’t a strong night for Ringo. Backpedaling looked good, but the change in direction and press coverage were not a strong suit last night.

Its early, but live full speed action does show more than practice. I believe this was a good teaching moment for the whole team, and the week ahead will sharpen the missed tackling, broken coverage, and miscues from last night. It will be good to have live practices with the Cleveland Browns next week as well.
