A FATHER DAUGHTER DAY @ HR DERBY

Attending the 2026 MLB Home Run Derby at Citizens Bank Park with my 13-year-old daughter was a masterclass in why we fall in love with sports, proving that the best memories aren’t just about who wins, but who you share them with.

As the sun set over Philadelphia last night, the air inside the stadium was thick with anticipation. My daughter, right on the precipice of those teenage years where parents can easily feel pushed to the periphery, was locked in. For a few hours, there were no phones distracting us, no teenage sighs—just the rhythm of the game, the smell of stadium popcorn, and the collective gasp of 43,863 fans watching baseballs soar into the night sky.

Entering the Cauldron

From the moment we walked through the gates, the energy of All-Star Week was palpable. Because it was Philly, the crowd was loud, fiercely loyal, and unapologetically partisan. We watched together as the field was introduced, leaning into the roar of the crowd when hometown heroes Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber stepped up to the plate.

The new swing-based format added a completely different tension to the night. Instead of racing against a frantic timer, every pitch mattered. My daughter quickly became our official tracker, counting down the allotment of swings and the distances of the absolute missiles being launched. When Tampa Bay’s Junior Caminero crushed a 491-foot moonshot that left everyone in the stadium breathless, she grabbed my arm, her eyes wide with total disbelief. It was pure, unadulterated sports magic.

The Plot Twist We Didn’t Expect

By the time the final round arrived, the narrative seemed perfectly written. Kyle Schwarber had absolutely electrified the stadium, putting up a massive 11 home runs to open the round. The entire ballpark was shaking, chanting, and practically clearing space for the trophy.

Then came Jordan Walker.

Stepping into a literal wall of boos from the Philly faithful, the St. Louis Cardinals’ young slugger looked entirely unphased. When he reached his final swing, he was sitting on just eight home runs. Under the new rules, hitting a home run on your final swing lets you keep going. What followed was one of the most clutch, jaw-dropping comebacks in Derby history. Walker rattled off four consecutive, do-or-die bombs on his final ball, silencing the crowd to finish 12–11 and capture the crown.

The stadium fell into a stunned, quiet respect.

More Than a Ballgame

As we walked out of Citizens Bank Park into the cool night air, navigating the sea of jerseys, I realized how rare these moments are. At 13, life moves fast. Friends, school, and growing up take center stage. But last night, baseball was the bridge. We cheered, and we witnessed history, and we did it entirely together.

Long after Jordan Walker’s final home run is pushed down the highlight reels, I’ll still remember the look on my daughter’s face under the stadium lights. It wasn’t just a great night of baseball; it was a core memory locked in forever.
